Are you feeling Lousy?

We are still in the pandemic and it feels like forever since we went into phase 1 of quarantine. Recently, we were getting used to phase 3 for a few weeks and now back to a limited phase 3 where half of the small businesses in the city of Toronto had to close again.

This uncertainty can overwhelm everyone and affect our mental and physical health deeply. I have felt emotions around being unsure of the future, sad, stressed and even lousy.

During times like this, the likelihood of us spending more time in “fight or flight” increases. Our body’s natural stress response was designed to alert us of potential danger and to keep us safe. The stress response—depending on whether we are directly or indirectly affected by something—is the same whether it’s physical or emotional stress.

If you are feeling lousy and with no energy, it is important to look deep into your cells as they play a big part in how we experience energy. If you nourish your cells, you will be more equipped to deal with external factors that can affect your metabolism and how you produce energy. If you know you’re not sick or don’t have thyroid issues and you’re still feeling lousy, it’s time to look at your cell health. It will even help your mental health!

How can you improve your cellular health?

  • Eat Nutrients-Dense foods:

What we eat gets broken down to feed our cells. When we eat whole foods packed with nutrients, our cells will use those nutrients to create energy and to support our bodily functions. Start choosing more roasted vegetables (for fall and winter) more fruits, fish, green vegetables like kale, spinach and watercress. As well as eggs, tomatoes, grass-fed meats, etc. and of course avoid processed sugary foods as much as possible

  • Emotion is motion:

I know you might feel with low energy and don’t want to move or exercise, but as Tony Robbins says “emotion is motion”  Even a long walk while listening to a happy song, getting a massage, going for a hike, dancing in your living room...anything that gets your lymph flowing, can help move waste out of cells so they are free to make more energy.

  • Hydration:

Water does everything from controlling the body’s thermostat to regulating blood pressure to taking out the trash. Even though chronic dehydration won’t kill you, the lack of water results in a general weakening of the body’s internal cellular environment, affecting digestion, skin health, liver function, circulation, etc.

  • Liver Health:

I love talking about the liver as it is our main detoxifying organ. It transforms harmful substances within your body into less harmful ones so they can be excreted safely via urine, sweat and feces. If our liver stops doing its job properly, it will begin to compromise, energy, vitality, skin, fat-burning capacity, sleep, sex hormone balance, etc. Increasing the intake of nutrient-dense foods as well as some herbs like Dandelion, Milk Thistle and some compounds like magnesium, glutamine, choline, will promote better liver function and better cellular function
