Weight Loss vs Weight Maintenance

Now that you have slimmed down and feel amazing, how can you make sure you can keep the weight off?

For some people maintaining the weight loss can feel harder. The reason being is because after achieving a particular goal during a few months, the fear or concern about being on a “diet” forever can kick in.

Maybe you don’t want to follow a rigid meal plan or you don’t want to weigh yourself every day, or you want to enjoy your wine again, etc., etc.

The good news is that reaching your new weight goal means you have mastered the skills and have created new habits that took you where you are. Congratulations!

·        You managed food cravings

·        You are aware of your mindset when eating

·        You followed a different nutrition/exercise plan

·        You took care of nutrients deficiencies

·        You took care of your liver as the main filter in your body

Research shows how some people who lose weight on a diet end up gaining back more weight than they originally lost in the first place. But what about the people who didn’t gain that weight back? What did they do?

Weight maintenance means adjusting your mindset and your new skills—accordingly.

Weight maintenance skills:

·   Connect to your deep reason to lose weight. Not just for the esthetics but what you can do now that you couldn’t do before.

·    Increase the level of your physical activities. Either more walks, more visits to the gym, or simply more exercises at home, even if that means adding a ½ hour of Pilates :)

·    Develop healthy but flexible boundaries, so you don’t go on the guilt roller coaster and know when to stop the pressure for useless indulging.

·     Apply stress management techniques ALL THE TIME

·     Find the food plan that works for you in this new stage of weight maintenance. The diet that works best is the one that you can stick with. BUT just because you’re losing weight, it doesn’t mean you’re also eating a balanced and nutritious diet.  Consult with your doctor and nutrition professional before changing your diet.

Applying most of these skills will keep you on the right track. So, put your plans into motion. Get out and move, check your mindset, get dense nutrients foods regularly.  And remember, progress and consistency is what you want.

You’ll have successes and some bumps on the road, but focus on continuing to move forward, in the direction of your weight-management goals.
